Short Story Excerpt: “Recapturing the Spark”

This is an excerpt from a story I wrote about a couple that is trying to bring some excitement into their bedroom. The wife has brought up the idea of opening up their marriage. While the husband initially agreed, he realizes after they are on their own separate dates that he really isn’t too keen on the idea, after all.

“Like if I drove my car into my house through the garage, I mean, fucking floored it, which walls would I need to go through in order to bring the whole thing down? How do you tell which of the walls are repairable and which walls are load bearing? The walls that are the points of no return, you know?”

Erin looked at Henry and nodded gently.

“I don’t know. I guess you never really know until you take the risk in knocking the walls down. Might be why some people never renovate their homes.”

Recapturing the Spark

This story was particularly interesting for me to explore because I got to wondering just how far are we willing to go for someone we love. Are you willing to go through with something you’re uncomfortable with in order to please your partner?

This story was selected for publication in the September edition of After Dinner Conversation literary journal. Check it out if you’re interested in the full story!
